Personalised Nutrition - UniNutrition

Personalised Nutrition

As a dietitian, I believe in combining cutting-edge science with personalised dietary advice to help my patients find the best way of eating for their lifestyle. My goal is to empower you with the confidence and knowledge to manage your diet without needing a dietitian in the long term. Together, we’ll create a personalised nutrition plan that works for you, taking into consideration your unique needs, preferences, and eating habits.

I take a scientific approach to personalised nutrition, which considers potential food allergies and intolerances, the health of your gut microbiome, and your individual genetic variability. I want to help you to make positive changes that create a long-term improvement in your health and well-being.

Nutrition and your Genetics

Nutritional genetic (DNA) testing is a new and exciting science that allows us to personalise dietary recommendations based on your unique genetic makeup. The advantage of nutritional genetic testing is that it becomes much easier to optimise your diet and lifestyle once you understand how your body works. I’ve completed advanced training in food and nutrition and genetics and regularly use genetic tests to help people optimise their diets by understanding what works for them and why.

In addition to your NutriGen™ genetic test, we’ll discuss your overall health, medical history, lifestyle, and food preferences, allergies, and intolerances. I’ll then interpret the results of your genetic test, in the context of your lifestyle, to develop a food and supplement plan with actionable steps that will create a high impact, in line with your health goals. I’ll provide you with a clear written report explaining how to optimise your diet according to your genes.

Some of my previous patients have discovered that their genes caused them to metabolise caffeine poorly, struggle with digesting carbs and starch, or have a genetic propensity to overeat in response to stress (based on the expression of their hunger hormones). Identifying and addressing these issues helps them switch to a diet that leads to significant weight loss, improved sleep and reduced snacking. In addition, seeing the genetic cause of their symptoms and difficulties with weight gain allows them to see their differences and struggles empathetically, which further improves their health and wellbeing.

If you’ve had a NutriGen™ test, and would like it interpreted, or if you’re interested in taking this test, please get in touch to learn more.

How Will Personalised Nutrition Help Me?

If you have difficulties with your nutrition, your weight, your energy levels or your digestion – there are so many diets you could try: gluten free, dairy free, low FODMAP, keto, paleo, vegetarian, vegan, low carb, low fat, high fibre… etc, etc. etc. You may have tried one (or many) of these diets already and had mixed results. It may have worked for a while but was not sustainable.

The goal of personalised nutrition is to put YOU in the centre. Most commercial diet websites and diet books try to make YOU fit into THEIR plan. It needs to be the other way around, because we all have unique lifestyles and nutritional needs.

The benefit of working with a specialist dietitian is that all aspects of your lifestyle and health will be considered. We will start with you describing your health and wellbeing goals, and these are likely to be very different to other people’s. Any action that we take together, is with your personalised goals in mind. There are many ways to improve our health through better nutrition. For example, we may choose to tackle your sleep issues first – because what, when and how we eat and drink affects our sleep, and how well we sleep affects what, when and how we eat and drink. All your consultations, meal plans, resources and advice will be specific to you and your personal requirements.
